Carniolan Honey Bee
The Carniolan bee, a bee species native to the Balkans, also known as the Carniolan bee in Turkey, stands out with its successful defense against insect pests and its gentle behavior towards beekeepers. Carniolan honey bees, which have high reproductive rates, are among the most cultivated bee species in the world. This bee species, which can easily adapt to different climates, can collect high amounts of nectar and secretions from plants thanks to its long tongue structure. Moreover, this species also has the ability to adjust its worker population according to the amount of nectar that can be collected. With these aspects, Carniolan honey bees are considered an ideal species for honey production due to their ability to rapidly expand their worker bee population and stop breeding production when nectar runs out.
Italian Honey Bee
The Italian honey bee species, native to Northern Italy, adapts to various climate types, from the warm weather conditions of the Mediterranean to the harsh and rainy winters of northern latitudes. Also known as the "golden bee" due to its yellow color, the Italian honey bee is among the superior honey bee species with its high reproductive capacity, productivity, and long tongue structure. Caucasian Bee
The Caucasian bee, native to the Central Caucasus, stands out with its black color. Thanks to its long tongue structure, this species can even utilize deep-tubed flowers. Producing more honey than other bee species, Caucasian bees are among the docile and therefore less stinging species. In addition to high honey yield, this species also holds an important place in beekeeping activities for propolis production.
Cyprus Honey Bee
Resembling the Italian bee due to its golden yellow color, the Cyprus honey bee takes its name from its native island of Cyprus. Cyprus honey bees, which have a fierce and aggressive nature, tend to sting more than other bee species. This species, also seen on the southern slopes of the Mediterranean Region, is not preferred much due to the difficulty of hybridization.
Anatolian Bee
The Anatolian honey bee, which can be seen in almost every region of Turkey, immediately stands out from other bee species with its brownish hairs and small size. Anatolian bees, which have a calm, hardworking, and robust structure, also exhibit high performance in orientation. This species, which has high fertility and brood-rearing quality, can accumulate honey even in difficult conditions because it consumes little honey.
Buckfast Bee
The Buckfast bee is a hybrid bee breed that emerged as a result of cross-breeding studies carried out at Buckfast Abbey Monastery in England. Initially derived from the Italian honey bee and the Western European honey bee, this species can now be produced by hybridizing many bee species. This bee species, which is resistant to diseases, collects less propolis. Buckfast bees do not cause difficulties for beekeepers due to their docile nature. These bees, which have the ability to produce large amounts of honey, also have low honey consumption in winter. High brood fertility and speed ability are among the most important features of this species.
Syrian Bee
Due to its aggressive nature, low yield, and difficulty in hybridization, the Syrian bee is considered a difficult species to cultivate. This species, which has similar characteristics to the Cyprus bee, is not preferred much in beekeeping activities in Turkey because it can negatively affect domestic production.
Iranian Bee
The Iranian honey bee, seen in the Southeast Region of Turkey, has similar characteristics to the Syrian and Cyprus honey bees. These bees, native to Iran, are preferred in Bitlis, Şırnak, Hakkari, and Diyarbakır in Anatolia due to their compatibility with the climate.
Thracian Bee
The Thracian bee, which can live 6 to 9 days longer than other bee breeds, is frequently preferred in Turkey due to its docile nature and high honey yield. This species, which resembles Anatolian and Carniolan bee species, stands out with its speed ability, wintering capability, and productivity. In addition, the Thracian honey bee, along with the Caucasian honey bee, is among the protected species.
Western Aegean Bee
The Western Aegean bee has become one of the most cultivated bee species as a result of breeding studies carried out in the last 10 years. This docile bee species, found in Turkey's Aegean coastline, Southwest Marmara, and Western Mediterranean regions, plays a major role in pine honey production. Can All Bees Make Honey?
