In winter, roasted chestnut sellers, who set up their stalls in the busiest parts of the streets, always praise the taste of their products in the same way: “Roasted chestnuts, a blessed treat!” At first glance, this might seem like just a marketing slogan. However, chestnuts truly receive the value they deserve from those who utter this harmonious phrase! Moreover, this valuable food provides a delightful consumption not only when roasted over fire and called "kebap" but also in many different varieties. So, how about learning more about chestnuts now?

1. WHAT IS CHESTNUT?

The chestnut is a perennial plant species belonging to the beech family. The chestnut tree, believed to be native to Anatolia, can easily grow in almost all forest conditions in the temperate zone worldwide. In Turkey, chestnut cultivation is most common in the Aegean Region, especially in the province of Aydın.

The chestnut honey obtained from these flowers is consumed with great pleasure by many people. 7. HOW SHOULD CHESTNUTS BE COOKED?

You can choose either roasting or boiling methods to cook chestnuts.

7.1. HOW TO ROAST CHESTNUTS IN THE OVEN?

  • Make a horizontal cut with a knife on the rounded side of the shelled chestnuts.

  • Place the cut chestnuts on a baking tray.

  • Place the tray in the oven preheated to 220-230 degrees Celsius.

  • After roasting the chestnuts for about 20 minutes, take them out and let them cool. That's it!

7.2. HOW TO BOIL CHESTNUTS?

  • Make a horizontal cut with a knife on the rounded side of the shelled chestnuts.

  • Add one or two sugar cubes to the water you have preheated in a pot.

  • Then, add the chestnuts to the water and boil them over medium-low heat for 30 minutes.

  • Remove the softened chestnuts from the water and drain them. Ready to consume!

8. HOW MANY CALORIES ARE IN CHESTNUTS?

100 grams of chestnuts contain approximately 240 calories. Since the energy value of chestnuts primarily comes from various carbohydrates, those on a diet should consume this food in moderation.
