WHAT IS A PINE TREE, WHERE AND HOW DOES IT GROW?

Pine trees, which manage to stay green throughout all four seasons, are among the valuable food sources for honey bees due to their distinctive fragrant secretions and aromatic substances.

Pine trees are among the most widespread coniferous trees globally, with over 100 species. Pine trees, which can grow in tree or shrub form, are considered the most popular plant of the Christmas season due to their iconic cone-shaped appearance. Pine trees, which even those unfamiliar with plant species can recognize, are easy to grow thanks to their durable structure.

The presence of pine trees in the Northern Hemisphere dates back approximately 200 million years to the early Mesozoic era. These evergreen trees, which do not shed their leaves throughout the year, are one of the oldest species in the world. Are you ready to learn a little more about these ancient trees?

1. WHAT IS A PINE TREE?

WHAT IS A PINE TREE?

A pine tree is a type of coniferous species from the genus Pinus, belonging to the pine family. Coniferous pine trees, known for not shedding their leaves, stand out for their ability to grow all over the world. There are many pine species that can survive even in the harshest climatic conditions, such as deserts or rainforests. Pine trees generally have a straight trunk and smaller side branches. As one of the long-lived tree species, pines can live for over 100 years in suitable climatic conditions.

2. WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF PINE TREES?

WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF PINE TREES?

Pine trees, which manage to stay green throughout all four seasons, are among the food sources for honey bees due to their distinctive fragrant secretions and aromatic substances. Thanks to its rich pine forests, Turkey accounts for more than 90% of the world's real pine honey production. There are many different types of pine trees. These species have different characteristics in terms of color, length, and shape. The most well-known pine tree species include:

2.1. Scots Pine

Scots pine can be found in almost every region of Turkey. Scots pine cultivation is carried out in the Western and Eastern Black Sea regions, around Sarıkamış in the Mediterranean and Eastern Anatolia, and in the Southern Marmara Region. This species, which can grow up to approximately 40 meters, can withstand cold climate conditions. Due to their long and strong roots, Scots pine trees collect all nutrients from the soil, preventing other plants from growing around them due to lack of nourishment.

2.2. Black Pine

The black pine species, frequently seen around Uludağ in Turkey, can grow up to 35 to 40 meters. A very resinous species, the black pine's leaves are a darker shade of green compared to other species.

2.3. Turkish Pine

Turkish pine trees, native to the Eastern Mediterranean Region, can grow up to 25 meters when mature. As one of the most common species in Turkey, Turkish pine can be easily cultivated due to its drought-resistant structure and ability to adapt to different soil conditions.

2.4. Silver Fir

The silver fir, usually growing in mountainous regions, is found in the eastern and northeastern parts of Turkey. This species has long and straight branches, with shorter and straighter leaves.

2.5. Fir

The fir, frequently seen along the Black Sea coast as well as in Uludağ and Kazdağları, resembles the silver fir in its general appearance. This species is especially preferred for paper production.

2.6. Spruce

In appearance, the spruce tree, like the fir, resembles the silver fir, but its branches are shorter and more inclined. The spruce, which can grow up to 60 meters tall, is generally utilized for its timber and resin.

3. HOW ARE PINE TREES GROWN?

HOW ARE PINE TREES GROWN?

Pine trees are grown from seeds or saplings. Pine trees seen in parks are usually planted by carefully removing pine saplings from forests and replanting them in parks. Pine cones usually start shedding their seeds in autumn. Pine tree cultivation can also be done by collecting and planting these seeds. For this, unseeded cones are turned upside down to make them shed their seeds. Pine trees grown from seeds need to be kept in a warm place for about 3 to 4 years. When the saplings are large and strong enough, they can be planted in forests.

4. WHERE DO PINE TREES GROW?

WHERE DO PINE TREES GROW?

Pine trees can grow on all continents of the Northern Hemisphere, especially in temperate and mountainous tropical regions. There are different types of pine trees spread throughout Turkey. These trees can grow in various climates and soil types in our country, from Marmara to the Black Sea, and from Eastern Anatolia to the Mediterranean. Moreover, thanks to their durable structure, they are not significantly affected by weather conditions.

5. WHEN ARE PINE TREES PLANTED?

WHEN ARE PINE TREES PLANTED?

The most suitable time to plant pine tree seeds collected in autumn is between December and January. If you are growing a pine tree at home, you can plant the seeds in a pot. Once the sapling reaches a certain size, you can plant it in the garden. You need to water this sapling regularly until it grows and place it in front of a sunny window. It is recommended to plant pine tree seeds upright in a pot or any soil. You can complete the planting process by lightly digging the soil and inserting the pointed end of the seed into the soil. Remember to ensure that the sapling is in a warm environment and receives sufficient water for the first 3-4 years.

6. DO PINE TREES SHED THEIR LEAVES?

DO PINE TREES SHED THEIR LEAVES?

Fir, cypress, spruce, and many other pine species do not shed their leaves in autumn and winter. On the other hand, these trees change their leaves throughout the year. So, although pine trees are considered evergreen, they actually renew their leaves by spreading the leaf-shedding process throughout the entire year.

7. HOW TO CARE FOR A PINE TREE?

HOW TO CARE FOR A PINE TREE?

Pine tree care begins the moment you plant the seed or sapling in the soil. Pine seed germination requires patience. It can take approximately 30 days for a sapling to sprout, depending on consistent temperature, humidity, and light levels. However, you might also consider purchasing a sapling instead of germinating seeds. At this point, it's worth noting that the cost of pine saplings is higher compared to their seeds.

When planting a sapling, instead of digging a large hole, you need to open a thin and long area where the sapling can fit. Although pine trees are adaptable to many climatic conditions, they require regular watering and consistent heat intake when they are newly planted. After the first 4 years, pine saplings can be planted in any area where pine trees are found.

8. WHAT ARE PINE TREE DISEASES?

WHAT ARE PINE TREE DISEASES?

If you see brown leaves on a pine tree, it's very normal to interpret this as the arrival of winter. However, pine trees are famous for staying green all year round and not shedding their leaves. Therefore, a pine tree with brown leaves may unfortunately be suffering from a disease.

8.1. Pitch Canker

First observed in pine species in the United States in 1946, pitch canker is transmitted to pines through macroconidia and microconidia carried by wind or insects. Pitch canker is generally not seen in cool climate conditions. High humidity and temperature play a significant role in the outbreak of the disease. This disease can infect pine saplings and lead to their death.

8.2. Annosum Root Rot

Annosum root rot disease is known to cause significant losses in forests in Europe and Turkey by causing root and lower stem decay in pine trees. Root rot is a disease that occurs in temperate countries and specifically damages coniferous trees. The decay starts from the roots and progresses into the trunk, eventually rendering the wood of the trunk dysfunctional.

8.3. Needle Blight and Drop

Dothistroma needle blight, which is among the important diseases of pine species, manifests as "Lecanosticta brown spot needle blight" or "Lophodermium needle cast disease." In needle blight, infected needles develop as yellow to brown bands. In brown spot needle blight, lesions on the needles first turn from grey-green to straw color, and as the disease spreads, they turn light chestnut. However, in needle cast disease, the needles first turn yellow, then change color to red over time, and then fall off.

8.4. Diplodia Tip Blight

Diplodia tip blight, one of the most common pine diseases in Turkey and worldwide, can affect trees weakened by drought, compacted soils, insects, or other adverse conditions. The tips of pine tree needles gradually turn brown, yellow, or gray. If left untreated, cankers can develop on the trunk and branches.
