PROTECT BEES TO AVOID A FUTURE FOOD CRISIS!

The majesty of nature can easily make humans believe that resources are infinite. But unfortunately, the truth is not like that! Moreover, tomorrow might be too late to realize this. Take action today to leave a habitable world for future generations!

As population figures rapidly increase around the world, the need for food products continues to grow at the same rate. However, unfortunately, due to certain reasons, the supply and demand balance in food production and provision is increasingly deteriorating: supply is showing a significant decrease in response to increasing demand. This situation is dragging the world towards perhaps the worst of all disaster scenarios: a food crisis! To reveal the extent of the danger more clearly, it is first necessary to answer the question, "What is a food crisis?" In the initial stage of a food crisis, it is believed that nuts and many vegetable types necessary for a balanced and adequate human diet will disappear. In subsequent phases, a reduction in staple crops like root vegetables and grains seems inevitable. To prevent this crisis, which will begin with malnutrition and end in hunger, the protection of pollinator species, such as bees, is of great importance!

1. THE IMPORTANCE OF BEES FOR HUMANS AND THE LIFE CYCLE

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEES FOR HUMANS AND THE LIFE CYCLE

All living beings in nature continue their lives connected by invisible chains. Therefore, the decrease or increase of any species leads to significant changes in the lives of all living beings, and of course, in the lives of humans, who are also a part of nature! The importance of bees, in fact, emerges in relation to this balance. Many plants frequently consumed in daily meals can reproduce thanks to pollination. Bees, butterflies, bats, and some insect species play a role in the occurrence of this phenomenon, which ensures biodiversity. So, the answer to the question "What do bees do?" is actually much more than is known: Bees play a leading role in ensuring the continuity of the ecosystem! This constitutes one of the reasons for the existence of bees. Therefore, the decrease or disappearance of bees poses a very great threat to human life as well.

2. THE IMPORTANCE OF BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY IN PRODUCTION

THE IMPORTANCE OF BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY IN PRODUCTION

The catastrophes that have occurred at certain times throughout history serve as a preview of the dire consequences that a decrease in biological diversity would entail. However, the increasingly worsening picture necessitates reminding of potential risks at every opportunity. Because the effects of ecosystem fluctuations are not limited to negative consequences in nature alone! The decrease in biodiversity paves the way for problems in many areas such as health, economy, politics, etc. How so?

For example, in case of a decrease in pollinators;

  • Three-quarters of cultivated and wild crops being endangered,

  • Decrease in food diversity,

  • Increase in diseases,

  • Disruption of drug production,

  • Depletion of farmers' livelihoods,

  • Outbreak of economic crises at national and global levels,

  • Many other problems such as resource scarcity, famine, and hunger leading to political crises and even wars, are seen as strong possibilities by scientific communities.

3. HOW DO YOU PROTECT BEES?

HOW DO YOU PROTECT BEES

Although human intellect, with its boundless abilities, shapes the world and life, the laws of nature always prevail over this intellect. All ideas and actions that are not in harmony with natural conditions, no matter how clever, ultimately turn back as harm to humanity and the ecosystem. To protect both today and the future, it is necessary to trust the power that arises from the unity of humans and nature. Moreover, this is the first rule of bee protection steps! Protecting the lives of these small creatures, who work tirelessly to ensure the continuity of life on Earth, is among the primary responsibilities of humanity. For this, adopting environmentally friendly practices, especially in agriculture, is one of the most powerful steps!

3.1. SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

To prevent a food crisis, bequeath suitable habitats to future generations, and protect bees along with the entire ecosystem, sustainable agricultural methods must be preferred. These methods, which mean "nature-friendly farming," are shaped around goals such as preventing erosion, obtaining maximum yield from the soil, using natural resources efficiently, and contributing to the ecosystem through agriculture. Moreover, thanks to this, the soil that remains productive also contributes to the nutrition of bees.

3.2. CLEAN NATURE AND WATER RESOURCES

Bees need water to maintain a certain level of temperature and humidity in their hives, to feed their larvae, and to produce honey. However, unclean water threatens the lives of bee colonies. Therefore, it is of great importance to ensure that natural water sources are kept clean to protect both bees and nature.

3.3. CAREFUL CHEMICAL USE

Chemicals used in agriculture harm all living beings, including humans. Most of all, bees! Bees that collect nectar and pollen from flowers quickly die when exposed to these chemicals. Or, they carry the substance they come into contact with back to the hive, causing colony deaths. To prevent this, chemical pesticides should be used as little as possible in agriculture, especially in agricultural areas near beehives. Or, it is important to choose liquid formulations instead of dust, which are more harmful to bees/the environment, and to spray in the evening hours when bees are not active.

4. POTENTIAL CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF A FOOD CRISIS

POTENTIAL CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF A FOOD CRISIS

The potential global food crisis, frequently brought up in scientific circles, is thought to be due to the chain reaction of multiple factors. Increasing population, environmental pollution, global warming, incorrect agricultural practices, genetically modified species, etc., many reasons bring humanity one step closer to this disaster every day. Moreover, humanity, anxiously seeking solutions because the ecosystem is sounding an alarm, accelerates this process a little more with practices inconsistent with nature. Yet, what needs to be done is to observe the harmony of nature and succeed in being a part of it without disturbing this harmony!

In this regard, the benefits of bees and the importance of pollination should never be forgotten. The way to prevent a food crisis goes through biodiversity, and the way to biodiversity largely goes through pollination. Even a honey-bearing plant placed by the window or a small clean water container in the garden can turn into a huge step for the future!
